Original or reproduction Plains Indian pipes and calumets. The smoking pipe is the most revered cult object. It's smoke was considered the best sacrifice to the Great Spirit, and, sending it to Sky, Earth and the four directions, the Indian prayed for his welfare and all his relatives. As long as the Indian has a pipe, he could count on the help of higher powers and the chance to be heard by the Great Spirit. There's a difference between pipes carried around by individuals as a badge of authority and pipes that belonged to holy bundles and as such were "owned" by the whole tribe.
