☩ Loop necklace is a distinctive ornament, worn by men only, which was in vogue among Blackfeet, as well as with other Northern and Plateau tribes. It hase been worn in lieu of bone hairpipe brreastplate favored by tribes of Central and Southern Plains, although both types were popular among Crow, Blackfeet, Flathead and Plateau tribes including Umatilla, Nez Perce and Spokane. Loop necklaces were also fashionable for a time amongst the Sioux in North Dakota and other Plains groups. It's origin is uncertain, but seems that it's idea might derive from the elaborate braid loops on early military uniforms. In general, there are two main types of loop necklace: (i) with loops of beaded buckskin thong, rolled cloth or cord, like the «Assiniboine Loop Necklace SKU 2344.18.01», which was most prevalent among Blackfeet, Stoney, Sarcee,
Plains Cree and Plains Ojibwa; and (ii) with loops of polished discoidal shell or bone beads, strung on heavy thread or sinew, popular among the Crow,
Flathead, Nez Perce and other Plateau tribes.
